The Diary of Jane: Storyline Explanation

I realize that the storyline is confusing poorly conveyed, so I wrote a detailed explanation for you guys. Hope this clears things up! If you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Just send me an email and I'll be happy to explain anything you're confused about. :)

P.S. I also added little notes of my own in the gray inserts to give futher insight.

In the beginning of the movie, we are at Ben's funeral. Jane is crying, and Seth is comforting her. Then Jane remember's Ben's death...

Ben was killed in a house fire. Jane happened to be walking by one day when she saw his home in flames. Ben was trapped inside his room, so Jane rushed to the door to try to help him. When she got there, the flames were too hot, and she realized there was nothing she could do because it was already too late.

During the flashback, there was a quick shot of Ben proposing to her, and hopefully you noticed the engagement ring Jane was wearing during the first half of the movie.

A year has passed, and Jane spent the day with Seth. They had been friends for a while, and Seth was beginning to fall for her. He walked her home and tried to kiss her, but she refused, saying her heart still belonged to Ben. He told her it's been too long and that she needs to move on. She realized he was right, and they kiss.

This disturbs Ben, so he awakens from the grave. His ghost flies out and returns as a zombie-ish human form and walks out of the graveyard to find them.

The next day, Jane goes over to Seth's house. They spend the day together again, and he invites her to stay the night with him.

This may seem like stock footage, but I wanted to illustrate how Seth was able to make her laugh and how she was finally happy after all that time grieving for Ben. Also, and her engagement ring is gone, which shows that because of Seth, she was finally able to move on.

Ben finally finds them and easily breaks into the house. He goes upstairs and breaks a vase next to their room to awaken Seth. It works, and Seth suspiciously looks around to find what caused the vase to fall.

I know the "vase" was actually an urn. I wanted to replace it with a vase but I didn't know how. I just needed him to break something (to match "something's just about to break"). :P

Seth goes downstairs to look around more when he hears Ben call his name. He turns around, shocked, and asks what Ben is doing here. Ben tells him that he shouldn't be with Jane and he wants revenge, but Seth wants to talk about it. Before he has a chance, Ben is already walking towards him and pushes him down. Seth lunges at him, but goes right through him.* Ben finishes the fight and kills him, right as Jane wakes up from the noise.

* Many people have been confused about whether Seth going through Ben was a technical mistake. I know it seems like it because Ben never changed forms, but the answer is no, that was completely intentional. Basically, Ben has the power to be normal or ghostlike (even though he didn't appear to change at all), so he's able to hurt Seth, but not vice versa.

Jane saw what happened, and immediately ran down. She pushes Ben out of the way and askes him why he killed Seth. Ben explained that he still loved her and didn't want her to be with him, but she had already moved on. She began crying, and Ben realized what he did was wrong. He walked over to the fallen Seth and magically lifts him up. In a flash of light, he disappears, but Seth comes out completely unharmed.

Okay, for all dramatic purposes, Jane wasn't afraid of Ben and she was also able to push him... I guess I wasn't thinking when I made that part. And Seth was supposed to be dead, even though he was breathing. Sorry guys, my fault. :P

Jane and Seth have their little moment, then go back to bed. Then we find out that Ben disappeared to Jane's dream, and she holds him closely. He is surprised that she forgave him so quickly, and they kiss.

I know that kiss seems to contradict the entire story. What I was trying to show was that even though she said she'd already moved on, in her heart she still loves him and she always will. Does that mean she's betraying Seth? In a way, maybe... I guess it's really up to you. :)
